Whether college students should pass all the courses or not has always been a controversial issue. Some argue that college students have the responsibility to accomplish their courses to make sure that they have learned something in college, while others hold the opinion that student has the right to choose their favorite classes rather than all the courses arranged for them. As far as I concerned, I incline to the idea that students should pass all the courses they take so that they can not only get a bachelor’s degree but also can learn more.

On one hand, passing each course is the necessity to get a bachelor’s degree. Almost all universities urge students to pass all their courses so that they can finally get a bachelor’s degree. If not, students won’t get a certificate which means years of study for a degree go in vain. Nowadays, a bachelor’s degree is the guarantee to a good job. Therefore, most students fight for a degree which means they should try their best to past all the courses arranged for them.

On the other hand, our society needs versatile people implies that students should take more courses to learn more so that they could be accepted by high-leveled position, although some of the courses are not their majors. To be high qualified, students should master knowledge they learned from their courses and pass them at the same time. Although passing the exam does not mean students have mastered what they learn, if not passing them, it’s certain that they don’t do well in their study. Moreover, failing in some exams may make people doubt that your learning ability is not so good. The employers may think twice before hiring you.

To sum up, as students, they have the responsibility to pass all exams to get a certificate for a better job, but also to make them high-qualified to win in the competitive job market.

The first Arbor Day took place on April 10, 1872 in Nebraska. It was the brainchild of Julius Sterling Morton (1832-1902), a Nebraska journalist and politician originally from Michigan. Throughout his long and productive career, Morton worked to improve agricultural techniques in his adopted state and throughout the United States when he served as President Grover Cleveland's Secretary of Agriculture. But his most important legacy is Arbor Day.

Morton (photo, right) felt that Nebraska's landscape and economy would benefit from the wide-scale planting of trees. He set an example himself planting orchards, shade trees and wind breaks on his own farm and he urged his neighbours to follow suit. Morton's real opportunity, though, arrived when he became a member of Nebraska's state board of agriculture. He proposed that a special day be set aside dedicated to tree planting and increasing awareness of the importance of trees. Nebraska's first Arbor Day was an amazing

success. More than one million trees were planted. A second Arbor Day took place in 1884 and the young state made it an annual legal

holiday in 1885, using April 22nd to coincide with Morton's birthday. In the years following that first Arbor Day, Morton's idea spread beyond Nebraska with Kansas, Tennessee, Minnesota and Ohio all

proclaiming their own Arbor Days. Today all 50 states celebrate Arbor Day although the dates may vary in keeping with the local climate. (State Arbor Days) At the federal level, in 1970, President Richard Nixon proclaimed the last Friday in April as National Arbor Day. Arbor Day is also now celebrated in other countries including Australia. Variations are celebrated as 'Greening Week' of Japan, 'The New Year's Days of Trees' in Israel, 'The Tree-loving Week' of Korea, 'The Reforestation Week' of Yugoslavia, 'The Students' Afforestation Day' of Iceland and 'The National Festival of Tree Planting' in India. Julius Sterling Morton would be proud. Sometimes one good idea can make a real difference.

The fax has greatly changed office work, especially in China. When you place a sheet of paper in a fax machine, the machine "reads" the writing on the page and changes the shapes of letters into electronic signals. It then sends these signals down an ordinary telephone line to another fax machine, which changes the signals back into the shapes of letters. You can imagine how usful this is, particularly in countries like China and Japan, which use written characters not letters. It is also useful for sending pictures, designs, maps and so on.

Sending a fax in more expensive than posting a letter, but much quicker. For example, you can send information abroad immediately, but mailing a letter might take a week or so. If you want to send a letter to an office abroad that is in a different time one, you can send a fax, and it will be received even though the office is not open. There are two other points to consider. First, remember that a fax can be read by anyone, so be careful what you send! Second, do not start faxing everything! It is much cheaper to post or email a long report than to fax it.

  Styles of Living

  Styles of Living

Some people enjoy living together with their parents after they have grown up. They hold the opinion because , living with parents , they can take better care of their parents and vice versa. Meanwhile , they can turn to their parents for help if they get into trouble or have some difficulties. To them, life in a big family seems to be more enjoyable than that in a small family.

Others, however , prefer to live separately. They cherish the idea to be independent of their parents, seek more freedom and wish to have a place of their own, in which they can do what they like. Bedsides , they don’t want to be overprotected by their parents but long for chance to face the society by themselves.

As to me , I like an independent life style in spite of the fact I love my parents. Different generations have different life styles and values. What one generations likes may not be another generation’s fondness. Living separately , each generation can enjoy different value. In addition , by leading an independent life , I can train my character and develop my own ability to deal with things encountered in my life.
