Unit 7 International food Teaching aims: Write about factual situations. Describe events or situations using multiple tenses. Express opinions, facts and common observations. Language focus: I like vegetables so I brought vegetable soup. I need some water or juice. I put in lots of chocolate and sugar. It’s delicious but it’s not healthy to eat too much sweet food. Tasks: Make a shopping list and write a recipe for a food based on personal choices . Listen and chant to practice talking about food. Step1: Pre-task stage Presentation 1. Bring in some food pictures including meat, vegetables, fruit, etc. that the students have already learned and also some pictures for the vocabulary in this unit. 2. Put the pictures on the board. Revise the food names with the class. 3. What’s your favourite food? I like hamburgers the best. I like vegetable soup. 4. Introduce the new vocabulary salt, sugar, sweet and sour. I like sweet food. I like spicy food. I like sour and sweet food. 5.Ask each other: How about you? I like… 6.Ask the students to collect some advertisements or articles about restaurants in newspapers and magazines. Ask them to find some restaurants that serve good food or are famous for a certain kind of food. Have the students talk about those restaurants in class. Homework: 1.Copy the new words and sentences. 2.Write down the restaurants you like the best. Step2: Presentation 1. Bring in four plastic boxes. Write vegetable soup, sweet and sour pork, fried rice and juice on separate paper strips. Put one paper stripe in each box. 2. Explain that you went to friends party yesterday and you brought something to eat. Choose a box and take out the paper strip saying. 3. Have four students come to the front of the class. Tell them that they went to a friend’s party and brought something to eat or drink. 4. Ask each student What did you bring? 5. Revise the conjunctions and, or, but, so with the class. Check if the students understand the difference between the words by asking them to make sentences like I like rice and vegetables. 6. Ask the students to read the dialogue below. Tell them to complete the dialogue using the correct conjunctions. 7. Ask the students to discuss what kinds of food and drink they like in groups three. Homework: 1.Copy the text. 2. Talk about the food and restaurants you like best. Step3: Chocolate 1. Ask the students if they like chocolate and where chocolate comes from. 2. Tell the students that chocolate is made from cocoa. Explain that cocoa is a brown powder made from cocoa beans. 3. Point to the pictures and ask the students to describe what is in each picture. Ask the students which foods have chocolate in them. 4. Let the students read the text silently and unaided the first time. 5. Let’s talk about what kinds of chocolate you like best in groups. 6. Tell the students to read the sentences and write T or F according to what they have read in the passage. 7. Check the answers with the students.
