11月2日晚，阿拉伯聯(lián)合酋長(zhǎng)國(guó)總統(tǒng)扎耶德因病逝世，享年86歲。扎耶德曾任阿布扎比酋長(zhǎng)國(guó)東部省省長(zhǎng)20年，1966年推翻其兄沙赫布特成為阿布扎比酋長(zhǎng)國(guó)酋長(zhǎng)。1971年扎耶德倡導(dǎo)成立阿拉伯聯(lián)合酋長(zhǎng)國(guó)，并當(dāng)選為開(kāi)國(guó)總統(tǒng)，任期5年，此后6次連任。外電報(bào)道如下：
United Arab Emirates President and founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahayan died on Tuesday, his office announced, reports AFP.
"The president"s office mourns with the people of the United Arab Emirates and the Arab and Islamic nations the leader of the nation and president... His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahayan, who passed away on Tuesday evening, November 2," the announcement said.
Highness與His，Her或Your連用，用來(lái)稱呼王子（親王）或公主（王妃），在這里表示“殿下”。例如：Her Royal Highness the Princess Margaret（瑪格麗特公主殿下）。
扎耶德?lián)慰偨y(tǒng)期間，對(duì)內(nèi)主張加強(qiáng)國(guó)家的統(tǒng)一和團(tuán)結(jié)，大力發(fā)展國(guó)民經(jīng)濟(jì)，提高人民生活水平；對(duì)外奉行中立不結(jié)盟政策，主張阿拉伯和海灣國(guó)家的團(tuán)結(jié)與合作，實(shí)現(xiàn)海灣的和平與穩(wěn)定。在扎耶德的倡導(dǎo)下，海灣合作委員會(huì)1981年宣告成立。扎耶德所奉行的內(nèi)政外交政策，得到國(guó)內(nèi)外廣泛贊譽(yù)，他本人也深受阿聯(lián)酋人民愛(ài)戴。
