When I was in middle school some of my classmates were smoking cigarettes. These classmates were both boys and girls.Another problem was the tendency toward vandalism and theft.
Although only a very few persons were involved in these situations.I often felt uneasy and unsure about their actions. We have been taught to strive to be good citizens and cultivate good character, but at such a young age it is disturbing.
Many adults smoke, yet young people today should worry about the possibility of cancer. Also people should know crime is bad and not rewarding, yet my classmates feel pressure from our society to cultivate another image.Perhaps now is the time both parents and teachers should spend more time talking to teenagers about the problems they are facing.
the bustle of the hospital was a welcome distraction as i opened my new patients chart and headed for her room. my son, eric, had just brought home a disappointing report card, and my daughter, shannon, and i had argued again about her getting a drivers license. for the net eight hours i wanted to throw myself into helping people who i knew had much more to worry about than i did.
rebekah was only 32, admitted for chemotherapy after breast-cancer surgery, when i entered her room it took me a moment to spot her amid the bouncing forms of three giggling little girls.
i told rebekah i would be her nurse and she introduced her husband, warren; si-year-old ruthie; four-year-old hannah; and two-year-old molly. warren coaed the girls away from their mother with a promise of ice cream and assured rebekah they would return the net day.
as i rubbed alcohol on her arm to prepare it for the intravenous line, rebekah laughed nervously. i have to tell you im terrified of needles. itll be over before you know it, i said. ill give you a count of three.
rebekah shut her eyes tightly and murmured a prayer until it was over. then she smiled and squeezed my hand. before you go, could you get my bible from the table? i handed her the worn book. do you have a favorite bible verse? she asked. jesus wept. john 11: 35. such a sad one, she said. why?
it makes me feel closer to jesus, knowing he also eperienced human sorrow.
rebekah nodded thoughtfully and started flipping through her bible as i shut the door quietly behind me.
during the following months i watched rebekah struggle with the ravages of chemotherapy. her hospital stays became frequent and she worried about her children. meanwhile i continued to contend with raising my own kids. they always seemed either out or holed up in their rooms. i missed the days when they were as attached to me as rebekahs little girls were to her.
for a time it had seemed rebekahs chemotherapy was working. then doctors discovered another malignant lump. two months later, a chest -ray revealed the cancer had spread to her lungs. it was terminal. help me to help her through this, i prayed.
one day when i entered her room, i found her talking into a tape recorder. she picked up a yellow legal pad and held it out to me. im making a tape for my daughters, she said.
i read the list on her pad: starting school, confirmation, turning 16, first date, graduation. while i worried how to help her deal with death, she was planning for her childrens future.
she usually waited until the early hours of the morning to record the tapes so she could be free from interruptions. she filled them with family stories and advice?trying to cram a lifetime of love into a few precious hours. finally, every item in her notes had been checked off and she entrusted the tapes to her husband.
i often wondered what i would say in her place. my kids joked that i was like an fbi agent, with my constant questions about where theyd been and who theyd been with. where, i thought, are my words of encouragement and love?
it was three oclock one afternoon when i got an urgent call from the hospital. rebekah wanted me to come immediately with a blank tape. what topic has she forgotten? i wondered.
she was flushed and breathing hard when i entered her room. i slipped the tape into the recorder and held the microphone to her lips. ruthie, hannah, molly?this is the most important tape. she held my hand and closed her eyes. someday your daddy will bring home a new mommy. please make her feel special. show her how to take care of you. ruthie, honey, help her get your brownie uniform ready each tuesday. hannah, tell her you dont want meat sauce on your spaghetti. she wont know you like it separate. molly, dont get mad if theres no apple juice. drink something else. its okay to be sad, sweeties. jesus cried too. he knows about sadness and will help you to be happy again. remember, ill always love you.
i shut off the recorder and rebekah sighed deeply. thank you, nan, she said with a weak smile. youll give this one to them, wont you? she murmured as she slid into sleep.
a time would come when the tape would be played for rebekahs children, but right then, after i smoothed rebekahs blanket, i got in my car and hurried home. i thought of how my shannon also liked her sauce on the side and suddenly that quirk, which had annoyed me so many times, seemed to make her so much more precious. that night the kids didnt go out; they sat with me long after the spaghetti sauce had dried onto the dishes. and we talked ? without interrogations, without complaints?late into the night.
By the time children enter school, they’ll have spent up to one-third of their waking hours in front of TV. The enormous influence of television is just beginning to be realized. While many parents take television as an electronic baby-sitter, they neglect the fact that television may be more harmful than it is beneficial to children.
Those who encourage small children to watch television claim that many programs for children on TV are helpful to develop children’s interest and enrich their knowledge. They also argue that preoccupied with TV programs, children are prevented from doing mischief. Although at a first glance these arguments sound true, the behavior of some children doesn’t seem to prove them.
In the first place, programs for children are not always beneficial to them. One science fiction serial keeps telling about some supernatural beings who can fly and always fight against evildoers. After watching several episodes, a small child was so enchanted that he imitated the heroes and “flew” from his room on the second floor. There are also reports of children running away from home to the mountains to practice martial art. These incidents are naturally credited with TV programs for children.
Further, being preoccupied with TV programs is not a good way for avoiding mischief. In the days before TV, parents used to gather together with their children, telling stories or reading poems to them. The communication between parents and children was thus better, so it was easier for children to understand what was good conduct.
Those who approve of children’s watching TV neglect television’s bad effects on children. Firstly, children are surrounded and bombarded by commercials for toys and foods. They are tempted into becoming consumers. They earnestly ask their parents to buy things which they do not really need. As a result, the parents are in a financial dilemma, and the children themselves always become victims of bad products because of false advertising.
Another bad effect of television is that children are over-exposed to violence. They watch hours of murders, fights, and crimes every week, with no adult around to tell them that life is not like that most of the time. The effect of the heavy dose of violence is to suggest to children that violence is an ordinary way of life, and that shooting and cheating are ways to success.
Most serious of all, children who often watch TV are becoming passive. They just sit back and let things happen to them. Children are inventive; they have the ability to imagine a whole world of their own. But what happens when their imagination is not needed, when TV does all the imagination for them? Obviously, these children are not going to grow up as inventive and imaginative as their parents, for they have been robbed of creative impulses by television.
To sum up, children’s indulgence in television is harmful. The problem, nevertheless, is not one of prohibition. Parents should supervise and guide their children’s watching TV instead of parking them in front of the tube, hoping it will act as a baby-sitter.
there are many arguments about the advantages and disadvantages of eamination.some people think eamination is the only best way to test how eaminees have mastered what they have studied and it is the only measurement for eaminers to select which persons they need.while, on the other hand, some object that eamination cant measure how the students have really studied.they say it can do nothing but burden the students.
as for me,i think for both eaminers and eaminees, the eamination can show what and how much the eaminees have mastered.the results of eaminations are just like mirrors for both eaminers and eaminees.
through eamination the eaminees can check their work and get aware of which aspects they have not done well,so that theyll make much improvement in their work.as far as eaminees are concerned, they can not only know how they have studied but also find out what they still unknown or what they havent mastered well.thus, they will be inspired to greater efforts to improve their studying method so as to make greater progress.of course too many eaminations are burbens to both eaminers and eaminees.
in sum,the eamination does more good than harm for both eaminers and eaminees.we must take a correct attitude towards eamination.we should take full advantage of it and avoid its disadvantage.
Recently more and more educator and common citizens suggest that universities colleges open more courses which are helpful for students‘ psychological health. Personally, I fully agree with their proposal for the following reasons.
On the one hand, the ever-increasing pressure of study at the moment and job-hunting in the future may lead to many psychological problems such as anxiety, depression and even despair, and the psychological courses open a door for communication and relaxation. On the other hand, such courses can teach students how to regulate feelings and emotions under different situations, which is a good preparation for the future life in the complex social network. Finally, these courses also introduce good habits which are conducive to mental and psychological health. To be mature and qualified citizens in the society, students have to do more than study hard.
In a word, I warmly welcome the establishment of psychological courses in universities. In my mind, they are good for students‘ psychological development.

There is no denying the fact that it has been a hotly debated topic whether students should attend military training in China in the past years. Opinions on this issue differ sharply. Some hold the positive view. They say that the training can not only build up students’ bodies but also temper their willpower. Besides, through the training, students can develop their team-spirit and sense of discipline.Others, however, hold the opposite view. They say that a short period of training as students are having now cannot work well in building up their bodies or strengthen their will. Instead, we should lay emphasis on their daily exercise and activities for such purpose. What’s more, a sudden increase of intense physical exercise, especially during summer, does harm to students’ health and may even cause deaths. What happened in the past years has proved this.
Weighing the pros and cons of these arguments, I am inclined to agree with the former point of view. Military training is not only a means to strengthen student’s physique and willpower, but also an effective way to enhance their sense of national defense and foster their patriotism. Though some deaths happened during the training, we should not give up eating for fear of choking. Besides, the deaths are perfect evidence that students need more such training. Of course, measures should be taken to ensure that the least harm is done to the trainees.
Several months ago, a good news swept on China that Mo Yan won the 20xx Nobel Prize for literature. After this big event, Mo Yan, the first Chinese resident to win the prize, has been the crispy fried chicken among China. Gaomi County in Shandong Province becomes a tourist attraction because of his popularity. For his award, Chinese media overwhelming report this exciting news. People are rushing to the bookstores to buy his famous book and some are even out of stock。
Generally speaking, his award means a lot to China, especially Chinese literature. The Nobel Prize for literature is a dream of Chinese literary field and all Chinese people. However, as a large cultural country that owns countless classic works, China had no winner of the Nobel Prize for literature which had become a great pity. Therefore, this prize finishes a pile wish of Chinese people. In addition, although we have a great number of great works, very few people can read a book carefully and tranquilly in the impetuous society. I think this exciting news will inspire people’s enthusiasm towards literature, which is a great motivation to the development of literature. This is what we are happy to see。
